Beautiful Spring Gardens Start in the Fall

Here are five bulbs that will thrive once winter moves out!

After the holidays the winter blues can often set in. Dreams of colorful spring blooms often fill my head when it’s cold and grey out.

Looking forward to spring blooms is something I’ve come to enjoy and something that also helps make winter a bit more bearable.

Much of the prettiest spring blooms are often planted in the fall. Bulbs planted a few weeks before the first frost ensures a beautiful and colorful array of flowers come spring.

Here are five bulbs to plant in the fall that will really make your yard pop when spring arrives!

BONUS: These are all perennials, which means they will come back each year!

• IRIS

Named after a Greek goddess, the iris is easy to grow and comes in a plethora of colors. 

Irises work well as border plants and also in clumps.

• PEONY

Such a stunner! Peonies seem too good to be true. Most take full sun and require little maintenance. Their blooms are large and unlike roses, their stems have no thorns!

Their blooms are truly so beautiful! Adding them to an arrangement in a vase takes any centerpiece to another level.

• DAFFODIL

These little beauties add a different texture and type to the garden. With beautiful green foliage, daffodils also come in quite a variety. 

Daffodils typically come in white and yellow color families. They add such a pop and will typically come back year after year.

Though they are the cutest little things, daffodils don’t typically play well with others in floral arrangements. Best to keep in the ground, or in a bunch with other daffodils.

• HYACINTH

Hardy with a lovely fragrance, hyacinths bloom in early spring and like to be in bunches with other hyacinths. 

Most hyacinths are bold in color and also come in a variety of whites as well.

Not recommended for floral arrangements with other flowers, yet such a vivid beauty in the garden.

• HOSTA

These are such lovely plants as well! Not only are hosta leaves a beautiful green, but they produce lovely purple blooms each summer as well.

Hostas are easy to care for additions to your yard. They are perennials and come back each year with ease.

In the fall, just cut the brown leaves all the way down to the grown, then patiently await spring!
